Introducing the Easy Foldout Table

Folding tables are an incredible space saver. They can be stored in virtually no space at all. Perfect for having guests over, or hobbies and the tucked conveniently away out of site. But assembling the table with the hinges that pinch you or the legs that don’t stay locked can be frustrating. 

Introducing the Easy Foldout Table. The Easy Foldout table has legs that unfold into position. Unlike existing folding tables, these legs unfold automatically together as any one leg is extended. Regardless of which leg you pull, the other three are connected in a way that easily pulls the others into position. The term “leg” includes the piece that attaches to the hinge. Each leg is connected by hinge to a corner of the table. A central piece rotates around a pivot at the center of the table. Each leg is connected to the central piece by a link with hinges on each end.  

Once the legs are fully extended, the configuration of the linkage stabilizes the legs even without a separate latch. A slight disturbance to the linkage would destroy this stability. Therefore, a magnetic cabinet door latch holds the sheet metal central piece in place. To fold the legs, give a quick tug on the central piece to release it from the magnet and rotate it a few degrees. Now folding any one leg easily folds them all for storage.

Lowell McDaniel

About the Developer

Lowell McDaniel is a mechanical engineer who retired from Hewlett-Packard after 20 years of service. He holds a Master’s degrees in physics and mechanical engineering. He has wondered since his youth about how to improve the process of setting up and taking down a card table. 

Lowell set to work on developing a much more efficient and stable foldout table and was able to create a successful prototype. This involved 44 equations, many trigonometry laden, orchestrated by a spreadsheet and a 3-D CAD system. The design for the prototype has been improved upon and is the basis for the CAD images pictured here.

He contacted the Mars Rising Network and had a patent application filed and had the invention designed properly so that he may see success with this great idea and turn it into a real product. He is actively seeking a company that would have an interest in licensing the system for a royalty.
